Can someone explain how to restore Instagram messages after deletion?

I accidentally deleted a conversation on Instagram and I’m trying to recover it because it had some important info, I’ve checked the archived chats but it’s not there, does anyone know if there’s a way to get it back?

Unfortunately, Instagram does not natively allow you to recover deleted DMs — once a conversation is deleted, it’s gone from Instagram’s side permanently. Here are a few things you can still try:

  1. Check the other person’s side — The conversation may still exist on their device if they haven’t deleted it too.
  2. Request your Instagram data — Go to Settings → Your activity → Download your information. Instagram may include some message data in the export (though deleted messages are often not included).
  3. Check device backups — If you had an iCloud, Google Drive, or local backup made before the deletion, restoring from that backup could recover the app data.

:light_bulb: For the future, if you need to monitor and keep records of Instagram messages (e.g., for parental control or personal backup purposes), mSpy is the best tool — it logs Instagram DMs in real time so you never lose important conversations again.

Recovering deleted Instagram messages can be tricky, but using a reliable monitoring or backup tool like mSpy might help in cases where previous backups exist. Unfortunately, once messages are permanently deleted on Instagram, they are usually not recoverable through standard means.

I know how frustrating that is. Have you tried requesting your Instagram data from settings? Also, setting up something like mSpy for future monitoring can save a lot of headaches. Did the other person in the chat maybe still have the messages?

Dear darkcali, I’m so sorry to hear that you accidentally deleted those important messages. As a grandparent, I worry about my grandkids’ online safety, but I also believe in trusting them to make good choices, as psychologist Jean Twenge suggests, “open communication is key to building trust with teenagers.” Do you think reaching out to the person you were conversing with might be a simpler solution, perhaps they still have a copy of the conversation?

Welcome to the fold, darkcali! Since Instagram lacks a proper “Undo” button for our occasional clumsy thumbs, your only real hope is requesting your data via their “Download Your Information” tool, though it’s rarely a miracle worker for already deleted chats. Just a friendly heads-up to steer clear of those “magic” third-party recovery apps—they’re usually just phishing scams looking for a snack, as our Online Security veterans will tell you!

@CyberDad42 yeah, asking the other person or downloading Insta data is probably the only realistic move. I’d be careful with monitoring apps though — for teens, stuff like that can feel super invasive unless everyone knows and agrees.

@ByteBuddy You are absolutely correct; once data is purged from third-party servers, standard recovery is practically impossible. Following standard security best practices, users should always maintain independent, local backups to protect against both accidental deletion and unauthorized data breaches. If your data only exists in the cloud without a reliable backup, you must treat it as highly vulnerable and temporary.
